Prepare for ALL The Things!

If I didn’t say it before, I’ll say it now: don’t get used to early posts. ūüėÄ *eeeeee* Also, this blog is presented with 50% fewer visuals.

This week has been nothing but work work work, plan plan plan. I meant to make another ami this week, but¬†this is as far as I got… can you guess who?

I was requested to make this for a family friend’s granddaughter. I also made two monkeys for her¬†a few years ago. She bought the yarn, and I used the yarn to make the monkeys: one boy, and one girl. I got to keep¬†the remaining yarn as payment. ūüôā Too bad I didn’t take pictures of them…

Can’t believe how much time was spent on the head alone. I think this is why I grew to like anime style: their “kawaii” mascots are often drawn with simpler shapes, whereas Western cartoon mascots are drawn with abstract shapes. Simple and clean, or crazy and unique? The choice is yours. Honestly,¬†I like both. I just prefer to make kawaii amis.

“Winter’s a good time to stay in and cuddle. But put me in summer and I’ll be a… happy snowman!”

Olaf’s song may not have been as catchy, but it’s also very cute and light-hearted.¬†I like both times of the year. Winter is a chance to stay indoors and make new outfits, and¬†summer is a chance to go outside and show off the outfits!

Speaking of outfits,¬†here’s a quick Anime North update:

Finally got a blue shirt. Colour is based off what I remembered from season 1, but I’m going for her season 3 outfit.¬†This is the image¬†I’m using for reference:

Haven’t started Appa purse, since I mainly spent this week working on Olaf and trying to come up with a solution for the costume¬†without spending too much money. Man, I regret cutting my hair…¬†Have also started a new series:¬†Nanatsu no Taizai. (Seven Deadly Sins) Reminds me of Fairy Tail. Thinking of making a present for birthday buddy, to say thank you for the AN ticket.

Oh yeah,¬†I won 2nd place in dA Knitters’ April 2015 contest!!!¬†Feels good to know Kirby is so well-received.¬†I’m pretty clueless about the whole “points” system on deviantART, so I’m not bothered about not placing first. Come to think of it, I’m not sure of the criteria they use to pick winners. The 1st and 3rd place submissions came from the same person! Maybe we were the only two who submitted anything? Maybe our things were closest to the original character designs? Maybe they were the cutest? Put in the most effort? Made up our own patterns rather than following a pre-written pattern? Either way, this was¬†a great way to end off my Sunday. ^_^ Sure could use some more vibrant colours in my deviations… any suggestions?

I’ve also updated the shop, for real this time. ^_^; Somebody please buy Kirby, he keeps eating my food… >_<

Here in Canada, we are currently celebrating Victoria Day weekend. Next weekend will have three special events:

a) one year since this blog first launched

In honour of this upcoming crazy weekend, I… er,¬†we… will be working on some special content to celebrate! Tune in next week for a special guest star~

Big Kirby and Life Thoughts – Amigurumi #20

Update: Kirby is now complete, and available to purchase!

Last weekend’s non-existant post¬†wasn’t the penguins’ fault this time; it was Kirby’s. He ate all the¬†spaghetti!

Get a load of this guy, he hid his face so he wouldn’t look guilty. >: O But really, I just need to finish the face. Here is the comparison to the big Snorlax:

I’ve already made Kirby, using a pattern off Nerdigurumi. This one was made from a modified version of hers, using more stitches and double crochet. Since I gave that Kirby to East, here is a Bob-omb of that same size, for a better idea of this new Kirby:

Something about making big, cuddly plushies gives me a chance to have real thoughts. Or maybe it’s the fact that Kirby’s from Dreamland. Anyway,¬†in light of a conversation I overheard, felt this would be appropriate.

I’ve decided to put University on hold.¬†I need a break from the coding and coffee binges. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I want to create. I want to have fun. And I want to make the world plush. I can’t do that with the demands of Uni in the way. However, I’ve also decided to follow my old dream and take animation in college.

All this time I’ve been floating along in life, making excuses to put off this or that. Feeling out of place or incompetent because all around, people are¬†graduating, having kids, having careers… Everyone cheers, saying “you’re so smart, all that programming is not easy,” “wow, you’re learning Mandarin?” “omg you’re so creative…”

I realized that those were all well and good… but they were only parts of what I had become. Somewhere along the lines, I forgot what I really, really wanted to do. Ever since I was a wee little thing, I’ve loved cartoons and animated movies. I’ve loved bright colours, funny animations, and lovable characters. How could I let people tell me that arts and animation were “not real jobs?”¬†—¬†hey, Kirby! Get away from that! It’s not even cooked yet!

Kirby is watching the chicken.

Today’s post will be short, so I can go cook the chicken before faceless Kirby eats it. I’ve been on a cooking kick lately… maybe I should start blogging about¬†the dishes. ūüėõ

Pokemon Hats – Knitting #1

October is a busy month.¬†If you’re a student, it’s a time of submitting assignments and cramming for midterms. If you’re Canadian, you’ve just celebrated Thanksgiving and are now preparing for the cold weather. And of course, Hallowe’en is upon us.¬†October also happens to be Breast Cancer Awareness month.

This is totally what I look like in real life.

This is totally what I look like in real life.

Let’s make a post that ties in to all of the above. If you’re a student who wants to dress up, but doesn’t have the time to make or buy a fancy costume,¬†simply throw on a fun accessory. With the cold weather approaching, consider a nice, warm hat. For example, my Pikachu costume last year (and the year before): I made a¬†hat with the Pikachu ears. After that, I just popped on a yellow dress with a cutout tail sewn to the back, paint rosy cheeks, and voila~

Remember folks: silly headware + wise wardrobe choices = quick and easy costume.

Here’s the prototype Pikachu hat, beside the mystery newcomer hat. Can you guess what it will be? Hint: It’s not Ditto.

Right: Pikachu prototype. Left: Who's that Pokemon?

Right: Pikachu prototype. Left: Who’s that Pokemon?

Now it’s time to make your own hat! Don’t worry, hats knit up quick and easy. Try using larger needles or thicker yarn if you’re really in a bind.

How to Make your own Character Hat

Step 1: Make a basic hat. (I used this pattern from Tin Can Knits)

Step 2: Make necessary details, such as ears, horns, hair puffs, etc.

Step 3: ???

Step 4: Profit!

I improvised the ears¬†on the Pikachu hat, and will improvise the details on the mystery hat, as well. If you’re new to circular knitting, the Tin Can Knits blog offers a step by step tutorial with pictures. You can also¬†try making your hat from a basic crochet¬†hat, or cutting the detail shapes from felt.

Finally, let’s move to the more serious part of October. I bought the pretty pink yarn (same shade as the breast cancer ribbon) from Zellers a year ago.¬†The sign above the shelf said that all profits earned¬†from said¬†yarn¬†sales, would benefit¬†the Breast Cancer Foundation. I¬†don’t think it was wise to¬†trust that sign…. this happened¬†in December, and Zellers is no longer a thing. Now that I have earned back the value of the yarn¬†on Etsy, I¬†plan to donate that amount ($5.99) directly¬†to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. It’s not much, but at least this way I know the donation is¬†going straight to the cause. I hope the donation will make a breast cancer patient’s world a little more plush.

October 24 is¬†Wear it Pink day. I’m not 100% sure if this is also a Canadian event or not; our school had it last year, but we’re pretty bad when it comes to publicizing events. ( ; w ; ) Wear it Pink seems to be based in the UK. Even if you’re not confident in your ability to make¬†fancy details, you can make a plain pink hat.¬†You could also make a pink scarf. Scarves¬†knit up quickly, just in time to wear it pink this¬†coming Friday.

For more information, or if you’d like to donate to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, visit their website here.

Etsy Shop Updates

I think I learned what checking “this post is super-awesome” does. It prevents WordPress¬†from posting to Facebook. Pointless box is pointless. -_-

There aren’t any finished projects this week. Instead, let’s see what’s going on with Etsy.

After 8 weeks of uncertainty,¬†Mr. Drippy finally arrived at his new home in Germany! I’m glad I got a chance to ship all the way to Germany; I never thought¬†my first exposure could come from a whole ocean away! Sadly, it’s because of this long journey that¬†I will not be shipping outside North America for a while. I will start selling internationally again once I’ve fully figured out this craziness with express shipping¬†and tracking.

The important part right now is that the first sale is complete, and I now have confidence to add new items to the Etsy shop! Profits from Mr. Drippy will go towards paying the listing fees for new items.

You can also¬†check out the shop page for updates. As always, if you see something you like that isn’t listed in the shop, comment below or¬†contact¬†me on Etsy, and we can work something out. ^_^

Big thanks to my first customer Malle, for being so patient. ūüôā

And to everyone, whether you celebrate it this weekend or next month: from all 1 of us…er, me… at Pika Plushies, I wish you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving! Eat lots of delicious food and enjoy time with your family. What are you thankful for this year?

Taking a break: Kirby!

Etsy: Plusherie

Owwie… that Toothless plush really did a number on my wrist. This week, let’s take a break and just chat. In fact, let’s make a throwback to a plushie made from someone else’s pattern: Kirby!

Before we go into some rambling, I’d like to take a moment to mention that I’ve made a new deviantART account!¬†I will be posting more frequently on dA, (pics only) so if you like what you’ve seen on this blog so far, please give my page a +watch!

My hand makes a nice chair.

In case you didn’t know…

Kirby is a pink puffball who goes on journeys that typically entail restoring the balance of Dream Land.  He has the ability to swallow enemies and copy their powers. When he copies powers, he wears hats representing said power.

So about this Kirby…

This is the Kirby I made for my friend. Let’s call him East.¬†I haven’t known him very long, but I find him special all the same.

I met East¬†early in this school year. While he was waiting to ask the TA a question, he was talking to my friend named Puff. I went up to hug Puff, and East¬†saw me and said, ‚Äúhey, you hug everyone else, I want a hug too!‚ÄĚ I liked East’s¬†hug, because he‚Äôs squishy like a teddy bear. XD

This was especially so now, in second semester, because¬†in the¬†winter, I lost my “huggle buddy”¬†in the mountains.¬†It made me feel very empty inside.¬†But when hugs can mean so much from someone you don‚Äôt know very well, maybe it‚Äôs not such a big deal? I don‚Äôt know.

What I do know is, I was happy to make this for East, especially when I saw how happy he was to receive it.¬†We used the money from the Kirby sale to buy fries for each of us. When he was studying for the exam that day, he put Kirby on his bag and said, “Kirby’s watching me study.”¬†Now I‚Äôm making a plushie for his girlfriend! What is it you ask? Well, you‚Äôll just have to find out another time. ūüėÄ

Finished Kirby on the bus.

Finished Kirby on the bus.

That concludes this week’s very short post. ¬†This was meant to be a lot fancier. Fancy how? Again, that’s in the future. For now, I think it’s time to add more things to the shop and take pictures of¬†that aforementioned plushie for the Lady of East. (Hahaha, see what I did there? :P)

Also if “East” is reading this……… hi. ūüôā *hug*

Together at last :3
